The Contemplation Cloth workshop series with Carol Cooke

Have you ever wanted to learn basic embroidery stitches? Would you like to break free from commercial patterns? Would you like to develop your own style and be more free style? Would you like to go home with a framed and finished work? If you answered yes to any of these questions, this class might be for you?

In this 6 part workshop series with artist Carol Cooke, you will explore various marking making techniques on cloth integrating paint, pens and embroidery stitching. Carol will encourage you to find your own artistic style while sharing her knowledge and techniques. Carol will bring her favourite embroidery and encyclopaedia books for reference. At the end of the series, you will have completed and framed a colourful and textured mixed media artwork to hang in your home. The classes are all about exploring, playing and having some fun with a contemporary stitch sampler.

The workshops will be held in the Shout meeting room at Pearce Community Centre on: Fridays in February and Tuesdays in March, as follows:

WHAT IS INCLUDED?

A doodle cloth (this will be your experimental stitch cloth sampler cloth) Intense Pencils Paints and Brushes Marking tools for outlines, drawing and colouring in Embroidery needle and some embroidery floss Paints and marking materials for each class A lightbox and simple design drawings will be available if you are not confident with your drawing.

WHAT TO BRING?

Bring extra embroidery supplies such a scissors, thread, needles and a 6” -7” bamboo hoop (if you have one.) Please bring a note pad and pen.

Carol Cooke

Carol is a Canberra based artist who encompasses two threads of enquiry, textiles and sculpture to create 2D and 3D works. This is supported by a drawing practice and extensive journal records. Contemporary Embroidery is her passion. Carol’s work explores traditional craft techniques with research-based investigations, much of her work opens conversations to environmental, social and political issues of the day, the past and the future. Carol stitches daily, exploring experimental embroidery and records the process in journals. 

Carol completed a double degree at Australian National University, Canberra completing a Visual Arts Degree, majoring in Textiles, 2016 and Art History and Curatorship 2018. She has recently added author to her resume when she launched her first book Improv: Embroidery.
